Tips: Touring Homes
Touring your potential
new homes can be an exciting undertaking, but can also become confusing
rapidly if you don't take some time to organize a few points about each
house you've seen. Here are a few tips to keep your decision making process
a little clearer, and hopefully easier!
Before you begin your
tour of homes, create a checklist of needs and wants to take with you.
Use it as you go through the houses, checking items off as you go. Later,
you can compare notes from each house. Using the listing page from an
online realty website and putting your checklist is a great recall method
since most include at least one picture.
Take a digital camera
or video recorder with you to each tour. Start each tour with a picture
of the home address, so you know which home each set of pictures or video
begins and ends. Be sure to include pictures of the surrounding neighborhood
and unique features of the home as well.
Immediately rate each
home toured on a simple 1-10 scale. Your initial feelings about a home
are instinctual, lacking the practical analysis of afterthought - a "going
with your gut". This can help you determine if keeping it on your
list of possibilties is feasible.
Always tour your top
homes again. Often you look for or see different features and aspects
the second time around. A second viewing is more of a reality check -
a more practical approach which may be the deciding factor of whether
the home is the best fit for your needs.
Making a choice based
on a combination of organized facts and feelings will give you the best
opportunity to make a decision that is both practical and comfortable.
A little planning ahead can go a long way to keep you from having doubts
or second guessing your decision.
